Object Description
This oban triptych depicts a gathering of samurai. The scene moves from left to right. In the far left print a large number of samurai are seen in the background as they begin to line up and move to the right. In the center print a number of samurai are seen lined up in front of a wooden doorway at the entrance to a large room – some are standing and some are beginning to kneel. In the far right panel two samurai kneel and present their swords at the tiled entrance to the room, two have stood up and are walking into the room. The figures are outlined with a very fine line technique, and their faces are drawn more like Western-style portraits than idealized in traditional ukiyo-e style. The print is colored in pale hues of blue, aqua, red and brown. There is a signature of Chikanobu, a publisher’s seal of Fukuda Htsujiro, and a date of February, in the 30th year of Meiji (1898).
