Lid 2006.033.01

A domed lid surmounted with a knob, decorated in overglaze colors of pink, green, white yellow, purple and blue. On the exterior of the lid is a flowering cherry branches with a butterfly. On the interior of the lid is a blossoming peony.

Bowl 2006.033.02

Everted mouth and raised base rim, decorated in overglaze colors of pink, green, white, yellow, purple, and blue. In the interior, center of the bowl is a peony roundel with a bird, on the exterior are two exotic birds resting on branches of large peony trees and flowering pruned, above a dense ground of grasses. The interior rim of the bowl has a solid brown border. The base rim is unglazed showing a white body. The glazed base bears an underglazed blue two character cursive script Yongzheng reign mark (1723-1735). The quality of the piece is very fine. This is an example of a famille rose piece with the opaque rose-pink color that was introduced to China during the early part of the 18th century. The opaque pink color was achieved by using chloride of gold which was previously only used in Europe. It was termed tang tsai or foreign color. The early motifs used were floral together with scenes of birds and poultry.
