Object Description
One of pair of fine late Chinese porcelain plates, each 14 5/8 inches across and each surrounded by several 18th Century style borders. The cavettos are used to create a single large tondo scene including men and horse and grotesque garden rocks in front of architectural details. The scenes are almost mirror images. Figures face right. The palette is the famous "famille rose" which first appeared in the early 18th Century. The rose or pink color which gives this type of overglaze enamel work its name is made with colloidal gold, a European development which was imported to China by Jesuits.
