James Robert "Bob" Green was born on November 10, 1924 on the Green Ranch to parents, William Henry Green and Willie Weaver Green. Bob grew up in Shackelford County and attended public schools in both Albany and Breckenridge before joining his elder brothers at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Bob and his fellow NMMI Classmates enlisted in the United States Army. Bob was stationed in Leyte and Okinawa during the Pacific Theater Operation, in which he served as the commander of a seven tank brigade. For his service to his country, Bob earned both the Silver Star and Bronze Star medals.
Bob married Nancy Ebersole on July 10, 1948 at St. John The Divine Church in Houston, Texas. After their marriage, Bob and Nancy returned to Albany, where Bob ranched alongside his siblings. Bob loved the land and was a very intelligent cattleman and horseman. Bob was always very passionate about his land and held a keen interest in wildlife and ecology conservation. He was well-respected not only for his ranching, but for his talents in both writing and public speaking, usually on historical topics. He was a true historian, being fluent in military history and the history of the American West, as well as Native American Lore. He was a published author. For years he wrote a weekly column to The Albany News and was a frequent contributor to the Abilene Reporter News. He co-authored For 500 Years: The Shackelford County Courthouse. In 2004, he wrote Okinawa Odyssey, a memoir of his participation in the Battle for Okinawa. A man of many talents, Bob was a musician, a sculptor and a pilot. He was proud to call Albany, Texas his home and for 27 years he served as co-narrator of the Fort Griffin Fandangle, so that the history of Shackelford County might be shared with others. Among his many honors, he received the 1997 Cornerstone Award, the Foy Proctor Cowman's Award of Honor, the 1998 Spanish Gourd Award and the 2007 Charles Goodnight Award. He was a member of Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church, as well as a member of many state and local boards.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Bill Green and Tom Green; and one sister, Mary Anna Green Musselman.
Bob is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Nancy Green of the home; one son, James Robert Green Jr. and wife, Susie of Fort Worth; two daughters, Nancy Kate Green Hargrove and husband, Joe of Shreveport, LA and Mariana Green and husband, Dan Searight of Houston; six grandchildren, Rob Hargrove and wife, Robyn of Austin, Reg Hargrove and wife, Anna of Austin, James Green of Fort Worth, Sarena Green of Austin, Katherine Lane of Albany and Bennett Lane of Houston; and two great grandchildren, Charlie Hargrove and Bob Hargrove both of Austin.
