Devernay was a well known NYC painter who operated a gallery in Manhattan for many years. Joseph Devernay came to the United States from his native France in the late 1950s. He was an interior and design student, who befriended Andy Warhol and the ceramics artist Edward J. Brown. Devernay formed an interior design firm in the 1960's and had galleries both in New York City and Washington D.C. for a decade. In the early 1990's he joined Marie Claude and Jean Zimmerman at Athena Fine Arts, after which he established his own gallery 'Joseph Devernay Contemporary Art' in the Upper East Side.
